Founded in 1950, the Foundation preserves a rich historical archive, including Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks and Letters from Prison, as well as documents from the Italian Communist Party and other political movements of the twentieth century. It houses a specialized library, organizes conferences, publications, and training activities, and promotes debate on democracy, culture, and society.

Context and needs

Antonio Gramsci is a key reference figure for historical, philosophical, and political research of the twentieth century. The growing international dissemination of his thought has created an increasing need for advanced research tools, capable of providing systematic access to documentary sources and Gramsci studies. In this context, the need for an integrated digital platform has become evident to facilitate the consultation, cataloging, and in-depth study of his work in a more accessible and efficient manner.

The project

To meet this need, the Antonio Gramsci Digital Library (DiLAG) was created—an innovative platform that brings together primary sources and research tools related to Gramsci’s biography and thought. The Digital Library is organized into five interconnected sections, allowing scholars and interested users to explore in depth the multiple facets of his intellectual production:

  1. Gramscian Bibliography: launched in 1989 by John M. Cammett, it lists publications on Gramsci in all languages. Some texts are available in digital format, in collaboration with the International Gramsci Society and individual scholars. The homepage highlights digitized collections, such as exhibition catalogs, proceedings of Gramsci conferences, and volumes from the series Gramscian Studies Worldwide.
  2. Antonio Gramsci Archive and Aggregated Collections: provides detailed cataloging with access to reproductions of Gramsci’s autographs, including letters, notes, school texts, personal documents, and the famous Prison Notebooks. Direct access from the homepage to the notebooks and letters is provided.
  3. Library Collection: houses Gramsci’s surviving personal library, consisting of 763 items including books, pamphlets, yearbooks, and almanacs, as well as 76 periodicals with approximately one thousand issues, mostly from his prison years.
  4. Gramsci’s Newspapers: includes the three series of L’Ordine Nuovo (1919-1920, 1921-1922, 1924-1925) and L’Unità (1924-1926), allowing systematic consultation of Gramsci’s journalistic output.
  5. Permanent Exhibition: provides an introductory overview of Gramsci’s life and writings through a detailed timeline, a biographical video (subtitled in multiple languages), a selection of his writings, and a photographic gallery.

The platform uses the IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) standard, which enables advanced management of digital images, allowing users to view, compare, and annotate documents interactively. Adoption of this standard ensures greater accessibility and interoperability with other archives and digital libraries worldwide.

The development of the Digital Library was carried out on the xDams platform, an advanced system for managing and archiving digital documents. The project benefited from the contribution of regesta.exe and mind@ware, who provided essential support in the customized development of both the platform itself and IIIF technologies, ensuring effective integration between interoperability standards and the specific needs of the Gramsci archive.

goals and outcomes

The Antonio Gramsci Digital Library was created with the goal of expanding accessibility to and dissemination of Gramsci research worldwide, supporting scholars, students, and enthusiasts. Thanks to the integration of advanced digital tools, it enables:

  • Easier consultation and in-depth study of primary and secondary sources;
  • Preservation and enhancement of the documentary heritage related to Gramsci;
  • Promotion of interdisciplinary study of his work and the historical context in which he operated;
  • Development of international collaborations between academic and cultural institutions.

The outcome of this project is the creation of a dynamic and interactive digital archive, providing immediate and systematic access to Gramsci resources, contributing to keeping the debate on his ideas and their impact on contemporary society alive.
