Context and Needs

LeviDigiLab is the cutting-edge digital technologies laboratory of the Fondazione Ugo and Olga Levi Foundation, created with the specialized consultancy of Made In Heritage.
The Foundation, one of the most prestigious institutions for musicological research in Italy, has initiated a project to digitize the book, archival, and documentary collections housed in its Library.

The Project

The LeviDigiLab project involves the establishment of a digitization laboratory at the Fondazione Ugo and Olga Levi Foundation in Venice, equipped with state-of-the-art tools for the digital acquisition of archival documents. The goal is to create a one-of-a-kind database. A key aspect of the project is the Made In Heritage approach, characterized by its technical innovation, tailored operational solutions, and economic and managerial sustainability.

Objectives

One of the main objectives of the project is to achieve high levels of quality, workplace well-being, and productivity efficiency. To achieve this, it was necessary to consider the entire process and develop custom technologies and methodologies. To this end, a custom server (MiHA Server) and specially designed scanners were developed to integrate seamlessly into the specific digitization workflow for LeviDigiLab. These tools ensure quality and security while adhering to the standards required for such activities.

Results

The digitization laboratory established by Fondazione Ugo and Olga Levi with the technological consultancy of Made In Heritage has resulted in the creation of a unique database. Utilizing cutting-edge tools for the digital acquisition of archival documents, the project supports large-scale digitization through AI-based algorithms that automate numerous image processing tasks. The preservation model adopted is based on standards that guarantee the long-term conservation and accessibility of the digitized data. For these reasons, LeviDigiLab represents a significant turning point in the enhancement and dissemination of the cultural memory preserved in libraries and historical archives.
