IIIF
IIIF, the International Image Interoperability Framework, is a technological standard for the sharing and usage of high-resolution digital images and other cultural heritage materials. Developed by an international community of libraries, museums, and cultural institutions, IIIF promotes open access and the sharing of digital materials.
IIIF provides a set of standardized protocols that allow cultural institutions to share their collections of digital images uniformly and interoperably. This means that images can be viewed and manipulated dynamically and interactively across different platforms and devices. With IIIF, users can easily zoom, rotate, and resize images, as well as create and share citations, notes, and other related information. Additionally, images can be combined and compared smoothly, enabling users to analyze and study materials in new ways.
IIIF also includes a standard for metadata description, providing detailed information about each image, such as the source, creation date, format, and other relevant details. This allows users to search for and find images that meet their needs more easily.
Supported by a wide range of software platforms and cloud services, IIIF is easy to implement and use for cultural institutions of any size. As an open standard, IIIF promotes collaboration and sharing among cultural institutions, enhancing access to digital materials and the enjoyment of global cultural heritage.
